IRWIN: Photographic work
Exhibition Catalogue
The catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition of photographic works by the art collective IRWIN, which for the first time brought together in one place more than 90 photographs created over four decades of activity by one of the most important Slovenian art groups on the international contemporary art scene. These photographs were produced either as documents of artistic interventions, performances, and temporary installations, or as independent works of art.

The Slovenian art collective IRWIN (Dušan Mandić, Miran Mohar, Andrej Savski, Roman Uranjek, Borut Vogelnik) has, over the course of its 42 years of activity, realized approximately 450 group and solo exhibitions.
This publication offers a comprehensive insight into the artistic practice of the group IRWIN and reveals how it uses photography as a means of documentation, transformation, and conceptual reflection, as well as how it positions photography in relation to the symbolic and political contexts of images. At a time when we are confronted with rising nationalisms and distorted historical narratives, it invites the reader to reflect on the images presented — and perhaps on photographic images in general — as fields in which meaning is arbitrarily redistributed and rewritten, and where the politics of representation is constantly being re-established.
“Photographic works constitute one of the constitutive lines of activity within the group IRWIN. Initially, we used photography exclusively to document works, exhibitions, and the activities of the group, although as early as 1985 we used documentary photographs of four actions as an integral part of the installation IRWIN-OHO. The first project conceived as a photographic work was NSK Consulate Umag from 1994. Since then, we have continuously produced works of this kind.
The works can be divided into four groups. The first consists of two projects connected to the work of the group OHO; the second includes a series of works related to the NSK State in Time; the third comprises works created in relation to the series of paintings that we began producing in 1984 under the title Was ist Kunst. The fourth group consists of individual projects that emerged along the way, for one reason or another, as possibilities we agreed were worth realizing.”
