Rob Hornstra: Where the Fire Slumbers
Special edition
The publication entitled Where the Fire Smoulders was released on the occasion of the exhibition Ordinary People by Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra. It is dedicated to a selection of photographs premiered at the Jakopič Gallery, which Hornstra created in early 2026 in Slovenia — specifically in the Koroška and Štajerska regions — as part of the series The Europeans (2020–2030).

The photographs presented were created as part of the project The Europeans, a ten-year exploration of the contemporary European at a time when Europe is facing numerous upheavals. Authoritarian regimes are on the rise, war has returned, and the political dream of a united and peaceful Europe is proving increasingly fragile.
In the decade leading up to 2030, writer Arnold van Bruggen and Rob Hornstra will document various European regions. Photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson published the book Les Européens in 1955. In it, he looked beyond nationalism and the local particularities of individual countries. More than sixty years later, Hornstra and van Bruggen share the same ambition. It is time for a new version of The Europeans.
