Ivan Cankar: images from life
A Graphic Novel About Ivan Cankar’s Life
The comic Ivan Cankar: Images from Life, published in the year marking the centenary of the death of the most prominent writer of the Slovenian Modernist period, was conceptually developed by Dr. Blaž Vurnik, curator of modern history at the City Museum of Ljubljana. The visual design of the comic was created by the acclaimed Slovenian comic artist Zoran Smiljanić.

In the comic, Cankar is presented in a different light than in literary-historical studies and school readers. He was a brilliant writer and storyteller, but also an ordinary human being – full of fears, doubts, longings, and both good and flawed motivations. Fate and history placed him in a time and space that he constantly scrutinized. He held up a mirror to society and his contemporaries – one that few were willing to look into honestly.
The narrative follows Cankar’s life, interweaving individual episodes with quotations from his works that illuminate his thoughts, experiences, and relationships with those around him. The comic is further enriched with engaging short biographies of Cankar’s contemporaries and many of his loves, shedding light on their relationships with the writer (Dragotin Kette, Oton Župančič, Ivan Tavčar, Anton Aškerc, Fran Govekar, Fran Saleški Finžgar, among others). To a certain extent, the dialogue in the comic also includes excerpts from Cankar’s letters.
