Andrej Hrausky: Plečnik's architecture in Ljubljana (2022)
Second, expanded and updated edition by Andrej Hrausky
The second, revised edition of the guide Plečnik’s Architecture in Ljubljana brings several updates: in addition to a new, refreshed introduction, a practical list of all of Plečnik’s works inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and their clear marking throughout the book, the layout of several pages has been redesigned and the visual material expanded. The author has also expanded the book with three additional works by Jože Plečnik.

The book Plečnik’s Architecture in Ljubljana by Andrej Hrausky – himself an architect, author of several books, and an expert on the work of Jože Plečnik – offers a comprehensive overview of Plečnik’s work in the Slovenian capital. As the author explains, the book primarily aims to “explain Plečnik’s architecture: how to look at it, how to see it, and how to understand it.”
The publication presents a complete account of Plečnik’s architecture and other creative work, through which he shaped the image of present-day Ljubljana from 1921, when he returned from Prague to his hometown, until his death in 1957. Its predecessor was the guide Plečnik’s Ljubljana, published in 1997 by Janez Koželj, Damjan Prelovšek, and Andrej Hrausky, which quickly sold out among admirers of Plečnik’s work.
“For two of the works we have only now been able to confirm Plečnik’s authorship, while one was installed only recently. Few people know that Plečnik installed the statue of King Alexander—created by Nikolaj Pirnat—in the vestibule of the University of Ljubljana, which at the time was also named after him. Only now have we found a letter from the president of the academy commissioning Plečnik to design a memorial plaque for the building where France Prešeren lived. Since last year, Castle Hill has also been adorned with a reconstruction of Plečnik’s beehouse, originally designed for the garden of Masaryk’s summer residence in Lány near Prague. In addition to these updates, it was necessary to comment on changes that have occurred in recent years: a new roof over Križanke, the reconstruction of the statue in Šlajmer Park, the long-awaited restoration of the balcony railing at Šance, and more. The result is a second, revised and expanded edition in both Slovenian and English,” (Andrej Hrausky).
Like the first, the second, revised edition of the guide Plečnik’s Architecture in Ljubljana was published under the honorary patronage of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO. It is co-published by the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (MGML) – which manages the extensive Plečnik collection as part of Plečnik House and DESSA Gallery, the only Slovenian gallery specializing in architecture.
The importance of a comprehensive and accessible book on Plečnik’s architecture in Ljubljana has been recognized by numerous supporters and patrons, who made the publication possible through financial contributions, as well as, in some cases, through their own work and materials: Ministrstvo za kulturo, Mestna občina Ljubljana, BTC City, Javno podjetje VODOVOD-KANALIZACIJA, Zavarovalnica Triglav, Grafika Gracer, GRAFO LIT, Atelje Galerija, Baumit Slovenija, Lafarge, M Sora in Arcadia svetila.
