Oton Župančič: Drawings
Exhibition Catalogue
“Oton Župančič (1878–1949) – poet, playwright, essayist, and translator – was, by the nature of his personality and creative work, above all a poet. Less well known, however, is the fact that his hand often guided the pen from the written word toward drawing as well. The exhibition presents works from seven sketchbooks and a folder containing individual drawings. Because of their bound format, the drawings in the sketchbooks can be shown only through reproductions, while the drawings preserved on individual sheets are exhibited in their original form; altogether there are 158 works on display. This represents the majority of the drawings that the City Museum of Ljubljana received from the poet’s heirs as part of the Oton Župančič Memorial Collection. A number of drawings – mostly accompanying Župančič’s writing – are also held by the National and University Library.”

Catalogue of the exhibition of 158 drawings by Oton Župančič, which show that for one of our greatest poets, visual expression was as important an inner necessity as writing. (30. 3. 2023–30. 9. 2023 – Ljubljana City Museum).
“In relation to his literary work, drawing was a secondary accompaniment, a more or less amateur activity. These are not works that would typically attract the interest of art history, even though their motifs align with the interests of the poet’s contemporaries, the Slovene Impressionists – especially in their perception of the tree as a spiritual message. Nevertheless, they are invaluable for a comprehensive understanding of Župančič’s spiritual persona. In them, we can often discern the recording of the same impulses that we also encounter in his poetry.”
