"Museum Water" bottle
Museum Water – a bottle with a message.
In Ljubljana, untreated, natural drinking water flows from the taps. The next time you want a sip of fresh water, fill your “Muzejska voda” (Museum Water) bottle with the city’s unique drinking water at one of the many public fountains – because clean water is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

The City Museum of Ljubljana, in cooperation with JP Vodovod–Kanalizacija and within the framework of the project Ljubljana – European Green Capital 2016, presented a major exhibition on the theme of Water. As part of this exhibition, the museum also introduced a special project titled Muzejska voda (Museum Water), through which it symbolically safeguards drinking water for the future, drawing attention to the importance of clean drinking water not only in Slovenia but also in the broader global context.
Muzejska voda is essentially a bottle designed with an imprint of a hand pressed into the glass. The handprint was contributed by an inhabitant of a small village in the Nuba Mountains, where people live in extremely challenging conditions and struggle to access drinking water in their everyday lives.
The handprint on the bottle carries a symbolic meaning: drinking water is a symbol of life and a fundamental element of humanity’s future. We must continuously remain aware of its preciousness and of the fact that it is not abundantly available on our planet.
The name Muzejska voda also contains a paradox: if water were ever to become a museum artefact in the literal sense, it would mean that museums would cease to exist, because humanity itself would have become extinct. With the call “let’s protect water for the future,” the Museum reminds us that we must never allow water to become a museum exhibit in reality.
Slovenia is one of the few countries with abundant reserves of high-quality drinking water. Clean drinking water is one of our special features and distinctions, and one of the reasons why Ljubljana was awarded the title of European Green Capital 2016. Muzejska voda represents an opportunity for people from various environments to exchange knowledge about water, water management, water sources, pollution, the social role of water, water conflicts, and corporate interventions in water resources.
The project Muzejska voda was created in collaboration with the Tomo Križnar Foundation and the Ljubljana water management company VO-KA. The bottles, produced by Steklarna Hrastnik, were designed by Darko Pokorn and Novi kolektivizem in cooperation with Tomo Križnar.
