The 20th and 21st Century Art Collection: Acquisitions 2011 to 2022
Exhibition Catalogue
The public institution Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (MGML) was established in 2009, when several previously independent galleries were merged with the City Museum of Ljubljana. Collecting artworks under the new name has thus been ongoing for more than a decade, while at its core it continues a tradition spanning over a century, initiated in 1907 by the then mayor of Ljubljana, Ivan Hribar.
Acquisitions for the collection follow two main trajectories. On the one hand, the collection is enriched by works offered for purchase by private owners and private galleries. These works help fill gaps in the museum’s collection of 20th-century “Ljubljana-related” art. On the other hand, the museum strives to acquire one or two contemporary works each year, intended to inspire future museum visitors to reflect on the city of Ljubljana and on life in the 21st century.
