The comic Spomini in sanje Kristine B., Ljubljana 1941–1945 (Memories and Dreams of Kristine B., Ljubljana 1941–1945) was created by historian and Curator of Modern History at the City Museum of Ljubljana, Dr. Blaž Vurnik, and the acclaimed Slovene comic artist Zoran Smiljanić.
The story is set in Ljubljana, which was occupied by Italian troops in 1941. The central protagonist is Kristina, a girl who is 14 years old at the outbreak of the war and 18 by its end – meaning that over the four years of war in the occupied city, she matures and comes of age. Growing up under such circumstances was an intense experience; many children were forced to become adults overnight. Kristina serves as a point of identification for the reader, through whom we follow and experience the events. She is an observer, a witness, and to some extent a participant.
The comic, which was also adapted into a museum exhibition upon its publication, was released as part of the project Hidden Children of the Second World War, partially funded by the Europe for Citizens programme, European Remembrance.
