Exhibition Catalogue
Academic painter and director Robert Černelč successfully, and above all analytically and systematically, combines the mediums of painting, video art, and film in his artistic practice. He further extends his work into the fields of video art, scenography, and screenwriting.

Robert Černelč is a versatile visual artist drawn to moving images that articulate the problems of contemporary perception. His works of recent years stem from the deconstruction of film. He explores the idea of how to reconstruct, in a painting, a specific cinematic moment suspended in anticipation – one that comes from outside, from a space not depicted in the image yet implicitly present.
Siegfried Kracauer observed that films know something we do not, and that within them something is hidden that can be uncovered. It is from this standpoint that the relationship between viewer and image emerges – unstable and unpredictable, and this is precisely what interests the artist most.
In his latest paintings, the motifs of waiting, observing, standing still, and gazing take centre stage – states of paused or redirected attention, fragmented across multiple “screens” in the post-digital age. He is not interested in pixelation, but in entering the digital innards of the image, where concreteness is rendered as abstract information.
