Our Claim: Slovenian Protest Photography
Exhibition Catalogue
The exhibition Our claim: Slovenian protest photography [2020–2022] is accompanied by a catalogue in the form of an exhibition guide. It includes a selection of photographs from individual exhibition cycles, created by a total of 38 photographers. The introductory text is authored by the exhibition’s curators, Julija Hoda and Metod Blejec, while the scholarly essay is contributed by Dr. Ilija Tomanić-Trivundža.
Building on the in-depth research conducted for the exhibition on Slovenian photojournalism, held at the Jakopič Gallery in 2021, and in line with the gallery’s mission to present and contextualise photographic records of moments from our past and present, the exhibition and accompanying publication Our claim: Slovenian protest photography highlight the work of 38 professional and amateur photographers. During the period in question, marked also by the Covid-19 pandemic, they captured scenes from various civic actions across Slovenia.

According to Associate Professor Ilija Tomanić-Trivundža of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, protest photography is “the result of diverse photographic practices involving professional photojournalists, documentary photographers, activists and members of civil society, as well as amateur photographers and protest participants,” and fundamentally serves three functions – “informing, mobilising, and documenting.”
The exhibition’s curators and authors of the publication’s introductory text, Julija Hoda and Metod Blejec, emphasise that Our claim offers the first major overview of the 2020–2022 period through photography, as numerous rallies, protests, acts of civil disobedience, and other forms of activism across Slovenia were photographed from the very beginning.
