Lace, One Woman’s Pittance, Another Woman’s Prestige
Monograph
According to Academician ddr. Marija Stanonik, the monograph Lace, One Woman’s Pittance, Another Woman’s Prestige presents a “full historical image of lace and bobbin lacemaking in the Slovenian territories.”
The monograph offers a comprehensive overview of the history of lace and bobbin lacemaking in Ljubljana, tracing its development from the entry of lace into aristocratic fashion and the first written references to bobbin lacemaking in Ljubljana, through the establishment of the first lacemaking school and the developments of the first half of the 20th century, to the beginnings of contemporary authorial lace in Ljubljana and the integration of lace into contemporary art and fashion design. As ddr. Marija Stanonik points out, one of the monograph’s key discoveries is “the fact that, besides Idrija, the second important centre of bobbin lacemaking used to be in Ljubljana, Valvasor even says that it first sprang into existence there, as he mentions making bobbin lace in Ljubljana before 1689.”
