Emona: A City of the Empire
Exhibition Catalogue
The exhibition catalogue published to mark the 2,000th anniversary of Emona – the first urban settlement of Ljubljana – and accompanying the exhibition Emona: A City of the Empire offers in-depth articles that highlight urbanity and monumentality as the key transformations Emona introduced into the Ljubljana area. It also presents previously unpublished results from recent archaeological excavations and concludes with an examination of the prestige and misuse of Emona’s rich heritage in the 20th century.

“The world of Emona, the ancient predecessor of Slovenia’s capital, has been the focal point of the City Museum of Ljubljana’s efforts from its outset in terms of collecting and studying the related materials. The archaeological research that was particularly intense in the second half of last century and more recently has managed to reveal many a secret about the beginnings of habitation in the area of what is today Ljubljana. With museum presentations of this particular period being a constant of our past work, the “Emona: A City of the Empire” show is the logical result of both our past activities and new insights into the time and space of the Antiquity along with its bearing on the present.”
